The white mulberry (Morus alba) is native to Eastern and Central China. They are large, deciduous trees native to warm, temperate and subtropical regions of Asia, Africa, and the Americas. Mulberries are low in calories and contain significantly less sugar than other popular fruits - including half the sugar of raisins. They are also a great source of protein and fiber which can help lower cholesterol and promote regular digestion.
In Chinese medicine, mulberries are believed to cleanse the blood and increase its production in addition to strengthen the kidneys and cleanse the liver. Scientific studies have shown that consumption of berries have potential health-promoting effects against cancer, aging and neurological diseases, inflammation, diabetes and bacterial infections.
Mulberries are a rich source of resveratrol (protects against stroke risk by altering molecular mechanisms in blood vessels) which are primarily found in red wine. They also contain an anti-mutagen which inhibits mutation of healthy cells cancerous growths.
Mulberries are considered to be great for controlling blood sugar levels and heart rate. They contain moranoline, which delays the absorption of carbohydrates and promotes healthy glucose levels.
In addition, these berries are an excellent source of vitamin C and phenols which are powerful antioxidants and immune-boosters. Mulberries are also an excellent source of iron, which is a rare feature among berries. Lastly, they are rich in B-complex group of vitamins and vitamin K - which helps the body metabolize carbohydrates, protein and fats.
